New metro line to connect Mumbai and Navi Mumbai airports

MUMBAI – Traveling between Mumbai’s two international airports is about to get a whole lot faster. The Maharashtra Cabinet Infrastructure Committee has officially greenlit the ambitious “Metro Line 8,” a 35-kilometer corridor designed to bridge the gap between Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) and the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA).

The project, estimated to cost ₹22,862 crore, aims to provide a seamless transit experience for air travelers and commuters alike. With a mix of underground and elevated tracks, the line is expected to drastically reduce the travel time between the two aviation hubs, which currently rely on heavily congested road networks.

Key project details

  • The Route: The line will span 35 km and feature 20 strategically placed stations.
  • Infrastructure: A 9.25 km section will run underground (from Terminal 2 in Mumbai to Ghatkopar East), while the remaining 24.63 km will be elevated, stretching all the way to the Navi Mumbai terminal.
  • Fast-Track Timeline: Chief Minister Mr. Devendra Fadnavis has instructed officials to complete land acquisition and approvals within the next six months. If all goes according to plan, the project is slated for completion within three years of the final approvals.

Broader infrastructure push

This approval comes as part of a wider push to modernize Maharashtra’s connectivity. Alongside the airport link, the cabinet also cleared a ₹3,954 crore ring road for Nashik to prepare for the Kumbh Mela and approved major highway upgrades in the Gadchiroli district to support mineral transportation.

For Mumbaikars, the Metro Line 8 represents more than just a train track; it is a vital link that promises to make the “twin city” concept a reality, ensuring that Navi Mumbai is as accessible as the heart of Mumbai.
