Thane, Navi-Mumbai and Bhayandar to lead India’s first pod-taxi revolution

Maharashtra is preparing to introduce a new chapter in public transport with India’s first pod-taxi network, connecting Thane, Navi Mumbai and Mira-Bhayandar. The project, recently approved by Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Mr. Eknath Shinde, aims to offer a fast, clean and modern travel option for lakhs of daily commuters struggling with long traffic delays.

The pod-taxi network will be developed by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) under a public-private partnership (PPP) model. This means private companies will invest in the project while working closely with the government to build, operate and maintain the system. The goal is simple: give people a quicker and smoother way to travel across three rapidly growing cities.

What has been approved?

The plan introduces elevated, automated pods running along major routes in Thane, Navi Mumbai and Mira-Bhayandar. These pods are expected to move above regular traffic, reducing travel time and offering a more reliable way to commute. The system will be fully automatic, making it different from traditional buses or rickshaws.

MMRDA has already appointed a consultant to carry out a detailed study. This includes surveying the three cities, understanding travel patterns and preparing a feasibility report. Once this report is ready, private companies will be invited to present their technical plans and financial proposals.

A key point to note is that local municipal corporations are not expected to bear direct financial costs, making this a lighter burden on local bodies while still benefiting residents.

Why does this project matter?

Thane, Navi Mumbai and Mira-Bhayandar are among the fastest-growing urban cities in Maharashtra. With rising populations, busy roads and limited space for widening highways, traffic congestion has become a daily challenge. A pod-taxi network could offer:

  • Reduced travel time
  • Lower congestion on major roads
  • Eco-friendly transportation
  • Better connectivity between key zones

By providing a new mobility option, the system hopes to ease pressure on existing transport services like buses, trains and autos.

What happens next?

Although the approval has brought excitement, the project is still in its early stages. The feasibility study, design decisions, final route selection, cost estimates and contractor choices are yet to be finalised. Once these steps are completed, construction can begin.

During the announcement, Deputy CM Mr.Eknath Shinde highlighted the importance of future-ready transport systems for growing cities. Commuters in the region welcomed the idea, hoping it would bring real relief. However, many are waiting to see how well it integrates with existing roads and public transport.
