Thane elevated corridor: A new road to smoother travel

Traffic in Thane has long been a daily struggle for thousands of commuters with busy junctions, merging lanes and heavy vehicles passing through the city, movement along the Eastern Express Highway often slows to a crawl, to solve this growing challenge, the government has taken up a major infrastructure project, the “Anand Nagar–Saket Thane Elevated Corridor.” This new corridor is designed to ease bottlenecks, improve travel time and create a smoother flow for both local and long-distance traffic.

The elevated road is planned as an 8.24-kilometre stretch, connecting Anand Nagar on the Eastern Express Highway to Saket in Thane West, built as a six-lane structure with three lanes on each side, the corridor will run above some of the most congested junctions in the city. These include Teen Hath Naka, Nitin Junction, Cadbury Junction and Golden Dyes Junction in Majiwada all known for intense peak-hour traffic.

Today, even with wide roads and existing flyovers, congestion continues because of service roads and slip lanes merging directly into the main highway, this forces vehicles to slow down, creating long queues. The elevated corridor aims to bypass this trouble altogether by giving through-traffic a dedicated, uninterrupted route. The design especially helps people coming from Mumbai or Nashik and travelling further towards Gujarat, reducing delays for inter-city movement as well.

The project carries an estimated cost of Rs 1,847.72 crore. According to updates from planning authorities, key early-stage work such as piling, pier construction and soil investigation is already underway. As per the progress shared, the corridor has completed a little over five per cent of physical work. Though at an early stage, steady development is expected over the coming months.

The overall timeline of the project is set at 48 months, including 36 months dedicated to construction, with this schedule, the elevated road is expected to be ready by 2028, provided progress continues without major delays. Once completed, the corridor is likely to bring noticeable improvements to daily travel. Commuters can expect shorter travel times, fewer choke points and less idling at signals. The smoother movement can also help reduce air pollution caused by stationary vehicles.

Along with easing traffic, the elevated corridor is part of a wider effort to improve connectivity in Thane. Another major project, the Eastern Freeway extension, will link South Mumbai to Anand Nagar, ultimately creating a faster, signal-free route into the city. Together, these projects are expected to support Thane’s growing population and expanding urban needs, while construction may temporarily slow traffic in some areas, the long-term benefits outweigh these challenges. A more organised road network, better flow of vehicles and reduced congestion promise to make everyday travel more comfortable for residents.
